How to recover deleted videos from an SD card

Deleted videos often stay on the card until something new is recorded over them. The hard part is that long videos are stored in pieces, and ordinary recovery tools give them back in the wrong order.

Stop using the card

Don’t record, format or copy anything to the card. Every new file can overwrite the videos you want back.

Make an image of the card

An image is a complete copy of the card saved as one file, so all the work happens on the copy and the card stays safe. Use a disk-imaging tool such as ddrescue (Mac and Linux) or a similar tool on Windows, and save the image to your computer’s drive.

Rebuild the videos

  1. Open HealVideo and choose Recover from a memory card image.
  2. Choose the image file. HealVideo finds the videos and puts the pieces of each one back in sequence.
  3. Videos that come back with their index play straight away. Any that still need repair can be sent to the repair step in one click.

Good to know

This works for exFAT cards, which is what most cameras use for cards of 64 GB and larger. FAT32 cards are not supported yet.

It has been used on a real 64 GB card, where it rebuilt 115 videos.
